'Buffy' Not Good For Families?
Conservative group likes 'Smallville' however.
Are you worried about what your children are watching on television?
Well, if you're someone who listens to the Parents Television Council, then you might want to take "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" off your weekly television list.
The council named the show the absolutely worst family-friendly show on network television. The group stated that the show's sexual and violent themes made it the last show parents should consider for their children.
"Buffy" spinoff "Angel," which airs on The WB, didn't make the list despite its similarities to its UPN counterpart.
Of course on the other side of the coin, "Smallville" on The WB was considered one of the best family-oriented shows.
The Parents Television Council, by the way, is led by Brent Bozell, the national finance chairman for ultra-conservative Pat Buchanan's 1992 failed presidential campaign.
The group said that the violence on the show is "not only frequent, but also very graphic. In past seasons, episodes included vampires being aroused by biting their victims, Buffy (Sarah Michelle Gellar) being stabbed and Dawn's (Michelle Trachtenberg) wrists being slit. Also, characters have been known to utter words such as "bitch," "bastard," "hell," "damn," "ass" and "piss."
Joining "Buffy" in the bad list are The WB's "Off Centre," NBC's "Will & Grace" (NBC), "Friends" (NBC), "WWE Smackdown" (UPN), "Big Brother 2" (CBS), "CSI" (CBS), "Temptation Island 2" (Fox), "That '70s Show" (Fox) and "Boston Public" (Fox).
"Smallville" joins other "family-friendly" shows "Doc" (Pax), "Touched By An Angel" (CBS), "Sabrina the Teenage Witch (WB), "7th Heaven" (WB), "Baby Bob," "Reba" (WB), "Ponderosa," "George Lopez" (CBS) and "Bernie Mac" (Fox).
