Section31.com Leaving Internet
Site has been open since 1998.
A longtime Star Trek news site is going offline.
Tim Hansen, owner of the Rochester, N.Y.-based Section31.com, recently made the announcement that his site would be going offline before the end of the year. He noted that both financial and time constraints has led to the demise of the site.
"During the last year of this Web site's service to the fans of Star Trek, I have had to consider the dedication, time and commitment this domain demands," Hansen said. "Most people may or may not be aware of this, but this Web site began as a college project, evolved into a fan favorite, and then into a business in the last year. It was meant to be a fun hobby, but events in the last year have sucked out the enjoyment of creating this Web site."
Hansen said it was unclear at this time what would happen to the site's domain name, www.section31.com. He currently owns the name through August 2006, and has been considering whether or not to sell the domain name or to give it to someone who can continue the site's name.
The site opened in 1997, and similar to Airlock Alpha and other sites, got its start on the free Web space provider, GeoCities.
Section31.com is the second major Star Trek fan site to close down recently. This past summer, Benjamin Winn announced that The Trekker Newsletter was shutting down after a long run on the Web.
