'Touch' Could Join 'Fringe' On Fridays

Fox could be expecting a huge ratings fall for Kiefer Sutherland series

It's hard to tell where Fox is going on this one. Either it's not confident "Touch" will hold the audience Fox needs during the main part of the week -- or there simply isn't a good place for the series on its schedule.

Whatever the reasons, Deadline.com is reporting a rumor that "Touch" could be moving to Fridays, pairing up with "Fringe." If that's the case, then that means the "Kitchen Nightmares" reality program with Gordon Ramsay could be held until mid-season. But it also means that there could be a significant ratings drop in the near future for "Touch."

Can Kiefer Sutherland get the kind of love "Fringe" has received from Fox executives over the years if that's the case?

"Touch" is averaging a 5.4 rating/8 share in Fast National overnight ratings from The Nielsen Co. through the end of April, but Fox is only pulling in a 2.1/4 on Fridays through the end of last week. Television shows, even with good audiences, don't carry them over to Fridays on Fox. While the "Bones" spinoff "The Finder" was the most recent to prove that, "Fringe" is almost a textbook case.

Last season, "Fringe" averaged a 3.2/5 on Thursdays before Fox moved it opposite "Kitchen Nightmares" on Fridays at mid-season. There, it languished at a 2.3/4 -- a drop of 28 percent.

"Finder" had a bit of a similar experience. Like "Fringe," it too aired on Thursdays, where it was averaging a 4.2/6. However, in April, Fox moved "Finder" to Fridays to replace "Kitchen Nightmares," where it lost 40 percent of its audience to average a 2.5/5 in six episodes.

"Touch" replaced "Finder" in March on Thursdays, and has averaged a 4.9/8 in the timeslot, although recent weeks, ratings have been closer to a 4.2/7, a decline of 14 percent.

It will likely, however, be replaced by "Glee," which is rumored to be moving to Thursdays as a lead-out to "The X-Factor," and possibly later "American Idol."

Fox has not yet released its schedule for the 2012-13 season, but if "Touch" does move to Fridays, expect a good chunk of the show's audience to disappear with it.

For now, "Touch" airs Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET on Fox.
