'Stargate SG-1' Could Take New Life In Digital Realm

Cryptic announcement has some fans getting excited

It doesn't look like there are any efforts to revive "Stargate SG-1" as a television show, but as a franchise -- there could very well be some more life soon.

Just what it is that fans will get, that's what we're still waiting on.

Ordino Studios, an application and game production studio located in the small European country of Andorra, says it could be making an announcement on a future "SG-1" project as early as San Diego Comic-Con in July. Darren Thomas, who is described as an "independent producer," told fans at a Stargate convention in Vancouver, B.C. over the weekend (where "SG-1" was filmed for a decade) that not only was Stargate owner MGM licensing out a new smart phone app, but that "SG-1" was being revived "in a new format."

Not much else was revealed, not even on the SG-1 Facebook page, according to GateWorld, except that Ordino and MGM would be issuing a news release at some point.

If it's a live-action series, then MGM is teasing an announcement without talking to actors. Michael Shanks, who played Dr. Daniel Jackson for most of the original series run, told Twitter followers Sunday that he is not involved in any "SG-1" projects at this point.

"Judging from the info I have red today, my guess is it's most likely an interactive game of some sort," Shanks said on his Twitter feed.

GateWorld discovered that Ordino develops first-person 3-D science-fiction/action adventure games for mobile platforms that include "mind-bending story and eye-popping graphics." The studio also teased that some of its first projects include "first-person mobile games for an established franchise owned by a major U.S. film studio."

"Stargate SG-1" ran between 1997 and 2007, airing its first five years on Showtime and its final five on Syfy. This was not the first attempt to bring "SG-1" to the game-playing public. A video game called "Stargate SG-1: The Alliance" was cancelled in 2005, while a massively multiplayer online roleplaying game called Stargate Resistance remained in development hell until it, too, was cancelled in late 2010 after MGM decided not to renew the game maker's franchise license.

Since coming to Syfy, "SG-1" has had two spinoffs, "Stargate: Atlantis" which ran from 2004 to 2009, and "Stargate: Universe," which ran from 2009 to 2011.

Correction on your discussion of Stargate games - straight from Gateworld's article, there were THREE Stargate games that were canceled or didn't last long. The first was SG-1 The Alliance developed by Perception PTY, and Stargate Worlds and Stargate Resistance by Cheyenne Mountain Entertainment. Stargate Worlds was the MMO that was canceled, NOT Resistance. Resistance was an online-only first person shooter that was released in 2010 and only last a year before servers were shut down, I believe the whole failure of both games was due to Cheyenne filing for bankruptcy.

It's not strictly true that Shanks is not involved in any "SG-1" projects at this point. He's been recording a new series of audio plays of SG-1 for Big Finish Productions fairly recently. The third series coming in May is going full-cast (like their Doctor Who range), as opposed to the enhanced audio-book of the first two series.

I would much rather have a movie or a TV show then a game.
