Bruce Miller will definitely see some familiar faces walking around the halls, beginning with Matt Hastings.
Hastings has joined Syfy's "Alphas" as co-executive producer, continuing a role he originally served for 27 episodes of "Eureka," which will end its strong run this year. He is part of the new management team led by Miller, who also made the jump from "Eureka" once production ended.
Hastings has some strong genre credits to his name, especially as an executive producer. He had that title in shows like "The Outer Limits" in 2001 and "Painkiller Jane" in 2007. However, he probably feels most comfortable in the director's chair. He helmed six episodes of "Painkiller Jane" and nine episodes of "Eureka," according to Internet Movie Database, including this past year's Christmas special, "Do You See What I See?"
Syfy has put confidence in "Alphas" to perform even stronger in its second season, but it seems to be doing it more and more without the team that led it in its first season. Ira Steven Behr, who many fans know from "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" and "The 4400" departed after the first season. That will leave the showrunner reins in Miller's hands, and there may not be too much surprise if he brings over more of his crew from "Eureka" in the coming weeks.
Syfy has not said what role Zak Penn will play, who is credited as the creator and an executive producer of the show himself. It's likely that he will continue in his current position of guiding stories and overall arcs, but that has not been made official as of yet.
This has to be at least something positive for "Eureka" fans who have to say good-bye to the show they have religiously followed for years. Whether the inclusion of Miller and Hastings will change the tone of the show is yet to be seen. While there are some comedic moments in "Alphas," the show is considered much more serious than the more fun "Eureka."
"Alphas" stars the ensemble cast of David Strathairn, Ryan Cartwright, Malik Yoba, Azita Ghanizada, Warren Christie and Laura Mennell.
