Need a Tom Baker fix, but don't have Netflix streaming?

BBC and Facebook are working together to make sure they can make you relax with the Time Lord, while still hitting "Like" for the latest pictures from LOLcats.

The new deal allows people who visit the official "Doctor Who" fan page on Facebook to "rent" nine episodes of the iconic British series. It's open to Facebook users in the United States, Europe, Canada and Australia.

"Our approach to Facebook and other leading-edge platforms is to be right there alongside them in fostering innovation," said John Smith, BBC Worldwide's chief executive, in a release. "We see this service as a perfect way to give our fans what they want, as well as a great way for them to get their fix between now and the autumn when [Season 6] continues."

That fix, however, is a classic fix, not from the season that stars Matt Smith. But this Facebook experiment is not devoid of the modern version of "Doctor Who." Two Doctors from the 21st century are available: "End of the World" with Christopher Eccleston and the two-parter "Silence in the Library" and "Forest of the Dead" with David Tennant.

Other episodes include "An Unearthly Child" starring William Hartnell, "Tomb of the Cybermen" with Patrick Troughton, "The Time Warrior" with Jon Pertwee, "City of Death" with Baker, "Earthshock" with Peter Davison, "Attack of the Cybermen" with Colin Baker, and "Greatest Show in the Galaxy" with Sylvester McCoy.

The cost to rent an episode is 15 Facebook credits, which currently run about $1.50 American. Once purchased, however, fans can watch the episode as many times as they want in a 48-hour period.

Revenue generated from the rentals, of course, help support BBC programming. The British cable channel depends on taxpayer support in the United Kingdom, but also on DVD sales and international rebroadcast rights elsewhere in the world, including its commercial-filled airings on BBC America.

Many "Doctor Who" episodes, including many of the modern version of the show, are available through other subscription services like Netflix streaming.

Oh, and new episodes of "Doctor Who," starring Matt Smith, return this weekend.
