Based on George R. R. Martin's acclaimed "A Song of Ice and Fire" novels, "Game of Thrones" chronicles a treacherous clash among royal families to secure ultimate power of Westeros, a vast kingdom facing peril at every corner.

HBO has renewed the series for a second season, which will be based on Martin's second novel "A Clash of Kings." Filming begins later this month.

Meanwhile, Martin's fifth novel “A Dance With Dragons" hit bookstores this week and is enjoying vigorous sales. More than 170,000 print copies and 110,000 e-book copies sold Tuesday, according to Random House. The sales mark the largest opening for a Random House book this year.

“What’s been really interesting is the physical-digital split,” said Random House Publishing Group's Scott Shannon during an interview with The New York Times. “These days, for a lot of our big titles, digital is outselling physical. That’s not what we’re seeing here, and it really speaks to George’s fan base.”

"Game of Thrones" is up for a number of awards in the 2011 Airlock Alpha Portal Awards this year, including Best Actor/Television for Bean and Best Actress/Television for Headey. Also nominated are Peter Dinklage for Best Supporting Actor/Television, the episode "Winter Is Coming" for Best Episode/Television, and the show itself for Best Series/Television.

The series also stars Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Emilia Clarke, Michelle Fairley, Maisie Williams, Sophie Turner, Kit Harington.
