Sometimes even the best ideas need a little more time to cook.

"Terra Nova" will not get the "Glee" route and air a preview episode in May as previously planned. Instead, Fox will debut the series, which stars Jason O'Mara, Stephen Lang and Shelley Conn, in the fall.

The reason? The visual effects are taking much more work than previously anticipated.

"'Terra Nova' is one of the most ambitious television series ever produced," said Fox president Kevin Reilly, according to Michael Ausiello with TV Line. "The cutting-edge visual effects used to create the world of 'Terra Nova,' which is of massive scope and scale require more time to be realized. This aspect of the series is essential, so we are pushing back the special early preview date to give the visual effects team the time needed for their groundbreaking work."

Fox had originally planned to air the pilot from executive producers Stephen Spielberg and Star Trek alum Brannon Braga over two nights in May. Filming for the series began last November in Australia with a budget reportedly set for $4 million per episode.

The show is set during near apocalyptic times in 2149 when humans, trying to find a home that is not dying, find refuge 85 million years in Earth's past in an effort to build a new human civilization. Fox ordered 13 episodes of the show before even seeing a pilot, purely from the sheer size and scope of the show, and the expense Fox is undertaking just to bring the series to screen.

Centers on the Shannons, an ordinary family from 2149 when the planet is dying who are transported back 85 million years to prehistoric Earth where they join Terra Nova, a colony of humans with a second chance to build a civilization.

Visual effects for the show are being led by Kevin Blank, one of Braga's primary lieutenants in television making, being involved in past Braga projects like "Star Trek: Enterprise" and "FlashForward." He also worked in both "Hercules: The Legendary Journeys" and "Xena: Warrior Princess" as well as "Alias," "Lost" and the pilot episode of "Fringe."

Blank also worked on the films "Mission: Impossible III" and "Cloverfield" with executive producer J.J. Abrams, who also co-created "Lost" and "Fringe."

Fox has yet to set a fall premiere date for "Terra Nova," but it is expected to debut in November.
