'V' - Devil in the Blue Dress

A Fifth Column plan reveals blue energy's destructive qualities, and sides are being chosen in the war against Anna

This review may contain spoilers.

The new "V" series has a distinctly different flavour to the original series, but in "Devil in the Blue Dress" the show returns to the core concepts from the original "V" with fear of a large-scale invasion

Although viewers have not had to be fluent in the original series in order to watch the new series, it is becoming important to at least recognize history repeating itself in terms of V's versus humans. In the original series, the fear of violent invasion united a disparate world on a global level and created the Resistance.

In both series, the cooperation between rogue V's and the resisting humans became a necessity. Once again, Erica (Elizabeth Mitchell) and the Fifth Column needed help from those like Lisa (Laura Vandervoort) and the returned Joshua (Mark Hildreth) in order to battle Anna (Morena Baccarin) and her new Bliss tactics. Ryan's (Morris Chestnut) reinsertion into Fifth Column activities saved Sid (Bret Harrison) along with Erica, Jack (Joel Gretsch), and Hobbes (Charles Mesure) from weaponizing blue energy. Erica realized that they had to extend faith to those they didn't trust in order to ultimately bring down Anna.

On the ship, the same game was being played in terms of who was on whose team. Marcus (Christopher Shyer) came back as Anna's right hand man to assist in making her successful. However, Joshua's returned memories helped him to see that he was really Fifth Column allowing him to help Lisa.

Ironically, everyone both on the ship and on Earth acted on one person's desires. Diana (Jane Badler) has been patient and waiting. So far, she helped Ryan get off the ship, gave Lisa advice about Anna, and warned Marcus about Anna's succumbing to human emotions. While the action of a possible coup of Anna's plans to invade and spawn new V's is threatened by Diana, the viewers should reflect back to the original series to remember her role that mirrored Anna's attempts at hybridization and control during that V invasion on our television screens.

Points of Interest

When the series first started and the faces of Anna showed up talking to all nations in their native languages, it showed how global the V's were. As Anna addressed the world about blue energy, she spoke only English with subtitles in the different nations.

Sid's scene as he infiltrates the New York Concordia site was filmed using a Snorricam, or body mount camera, to give a more intense feeling to his purpose as well as to focus on his being slightly out of his depths in his role as a saboteur.

For those paying attention, the previews for the last episode for the season (or perhaps the series) gave the viewers a peek at original "V" castmember Marc Singer who played the pivotal role of Mike Donovan.

What Worked

In a bold move for a large ensemble show, the characters are all being set in motion, and for the first time the show doesn't seem as predictable because with so many players anything can happen. Now the show could go in any direction giving victory to either Anna or the Fifth Column with the return of both Marcus as a true and unemotional V or Joshua as a Fifth Column member.

The writers really took advantage of bringing back an original cast member with Jane Badler as Diana. Between her discussions and clashes with Anna as well as her manipulation of others, she is now presented in "Devil in the Blue Dress" as the leader of the opposition to Anna. Playing off of the last episode's theme, there are so many that could come into power that viewers should remain intrigued.

What Didn’t Work

There is a cloud hanging over the series. As it is finally hitting its stride and offering interesting storylines and surprises to go along with its more sophisticated special effects, there is no security that the show will return for another season. With just one more episode to go, the question remains as to whether or not the series will end completely or just be a seasonal finale. Will ABC be willing to give the show a chance to go where it has the potential to go, or will it pull the plug? Will viewers want the show to continue?

Giving Credit Where Credit Is Due

"Devil in a Blue Dress" was written by Hans Tobeason. It was directed by Ralph Hemecker.

“V” airs at 9 p.m. ET on ABC.
