Spiner Glad To See Wait
Four years between films can only be a good thing, actors says
It's not like fans are waiting more than a decade for a new film like they did for the first prequel movie of "Star Wars," but any type of wait can only be good for the Star Trek franchise. At least so says Brent Spiner, best known as Lt. Cmdr. Data in the upcoming movie "Star Trek: Nemesis."
"The thing is that we promote these movies, and then they take them overseas, and we do that kind of thing (again)," Spiner recently told Sci-Fi Wire. "With the last movie, I think there was barely three years between 'Firsrt Contact' and 'Insurrection,' and we all felt as if we'd just finished talked about 'First Contact' and we were filming 'Insurrection.'"
"Star Trek: First Contact" was released in 1996 while "Star Trek: Insurrection" was released in 1998. With the new movie coming four years later, Spiner said he and the cast feel they have a bit more breathing room this time.
"There really just was no air in between them and no time for people to just settle down," he said. "And there's every possibility that 'Insurrection' was rushed into production to capitalize on what seemed to be a market. I think they were wise this time to wait a while. Hopefully, it has built a hunger (for a new Star Trek film) among fans. We'll see."
Spiner helped write the new movie with Oscar-nominated scribe John Logan. The movie is expected to premiere Dec. 20.
