Berman Gets Another 5 Years

Paramount renews their agreement with Star Trek heir

Rick Berman, who helped bring Gene Roddenberry's Star Trek creation far beyond the original series and the next generation, has agreed to a new deal with Paramount Pictures that would keep him at the studio for another five years.

According to Variety, Berman's new contract with Paramount has an estimated value of $10 million, and even though he is deeply involved in production of UPN's "Enterprise" and the upcoming feature film "Star Trek: Nemesis," which currently is in post-production, Berman said he hopes his new agreement with Paramount will allow him to work on some non-Star Trek projects as well.

"There's nothing that dictactes you giving your all (more) than the first season of a new TV series," Berman said. "And I'm going to be very committed to 'Enterprise'; it needs a lot of nurturting for at least a couple more years. (But) during the course of this next five-year deal, I'm going to force myself to find the time to start branching out. I want to work on the kind of projects where people drive cars and wear sneakers -- something a little more earthbound."

There is no indication yet that this new deal will start things cranking for a sixth Star Trek television series.
