Eastman Talks 'Andromeda'

The executive producer says things steadily improve on the show

If you were hoping for some significant story arcs in "Gene Roddenberry's Andromeda," it seems they went out of vogue when series developer Robert Hewitt Wolfe and co-producer Ethlie Ann Vare bid the series farewell.

"You'll see the conclusion of some of the show's long term themes at the end of Season 2," executive producer Allan Eastman recently told TV Zone. "In year three, there are going to be story arcs that might revolve around a certain person, place or subject. We'll play them out over three or four episodes, resolve them and then move on. Watch out for a couple of interesting character developments when it comes to the Andromeda crew.

"A few old faces will return and we plan to introduce several new ones as well. We're getting better and better as time goes on, and I don't think fans will be disappointed with what's ahead."

Like the original "Star Trek" series on NBC, "Andromeda" has had to do a lot with a little bit of money. Eastman said his crew has been working hard to give the best value to Tribune Entertainment's dollar.

"Most of our problems in the first year were, in fact, execution ones," he said. "We make 'Andromeda' for about 60 percent of what the Star Trek franchise spends on its shows, which is a really tight budget. We spend every penny very carefully, but frankly, we ran out of money near the end of last season.

"As a result, some of the sets weren't as finished as we would have liked. I think a few of our alien species were rather poorly conceived in the beginning. We had costume problems and a few of the visual effects weren't up to par, but it's all stuff that's been improved on."
