Artistic License: Harry Potty And The Deathly Boring
A new graphic novel presents a parody of the story of the Boy Wizard
If you like Harry Potter, and parodies, there is a new item at your local comic book shop that just might be of interest.
Papercutz has started a new graphic novel series entitled Papercutz Slices, with parodies of pop culture icons. And the first entry is Harry Potty and the Deathly Boring.
I was a little afraid of this when I first heard about it, as some parodies go a bit too far. However, I think this one worked well. As you might expect, not every joke works, and some are real groaners. Also, as is natural, since everyone's sense of humor is different, some people will like some jokes that others hate.
While the title would indicate that it is based on the final book, it also takes a look at the previous books, giving each similar names, such as Omelette of Fire and The Border of Phoenix. These are not separate issues, but a flashback section where Whiny Stranger gives a recap, using the spell rememberallthisstufficis so that readers know the whole story.
Naturally, joining Harry and Whiny is Don Measley, and the other important characters are there as well, from Dumb-as-a-door, to Barista Frappe, to Valuemart and the Odor Eaters. There are also guest appearances from Barnabus Collins, James Kirk, John Wilkes Booth, Gladys Night and the Pips, and more.
The important thing to remember about this, and indeed any parody, is if you are the type of person who can laugh when something you like is the butt of the jokes. Writer Stefan Petrucha did a good job using jokes that a wide variety of fans and readers would understand, without going too far and being offensive. The art, by Rick Parker, was nicely done, and absolutely fit the work. It was humorous in all the right places, and definitely helped sell the jokes.
One nice touch was the constant change in Harry's scar.
This graphic novel won't be for everyone, but if you can laugh and love something at the same time, then try laughing with this book. It may also make a great gift for the Harry Potter fan on your Christmas list, if they have a good sense of humor.
