'Caprica' - Things We Lock Away

Another great "big bad" bites the dust too soon.

This review may contain spoilers.

Last week it was Barnabus (James Marsters), this week it was Vergis (John Pyper-Ferguson). At least Daniel Graystone(Eric Stoltz) won't have to deal with his mortal enemy anymore. Next week, if Clarice (Polly Walker) goes, "Caprica" is going to have to start all over again - and I'm not sure they can pull it off.

Two grand plotlines were wrapped up this episode - Daniel got the business back, and Vergis ended their feud by impaling himself on a dagger held by Daniel. It was a tremendous way to go - you could say the ultimate revenge, but it was just too soon to see such a great bad guy leave the show. Both Barnabus and Vergis could have stuck around for a few more episodes - now we only have Clarice to keep ourselves preoccupied.

We also had the Adama/Graystone family joining together on Caprica, but also in the virtual world. Zoe (Alessandra Torresani) and Tamara (Genevieve Buechner) both got some good screen time together, and eventually joined forces after battling to "almost" death. The only complaint is that neither young actress really appears to have the acting chops to carry off such intense scenes. They almost seem as though they are trying to appear tough - it doesn't come naturally to them at all. This is unfortunate - their dads are both excellently cast, but the two girls seem to miss the mark.

What Worked

Vergis' death scene was artfully mastered; he died at the hand of an unwilling Graystone, which will surely open a Pandora's box of troubles for Daniel. He may have his business back - but will it be worth it?

Lacy (Magda Apanowicz) is the only young actress on the show that is worth anything - she's managed to play a torn teenager suffering from an incredible loss, the lost of her best friend, to a captive in the evil Clarice's attic. She's got great range - the other two actresses could learn a thing or two from her.

What Didn't Work

The fact that there's virtually no conversation between Amanda (Paula Malcomson) and Daniel. She's back in their house they've shared together briefly- does he know she survived her fall (jump, rather)? If he does, he, as usual, seems much more concerned with his business than the state of his wife.

We need to see more of the Adamas ... where has young William (Sina Najafi) gone too? We know he's not at school. Joseph Adama (Esai Morales) has been turned to mere servant for Daniel - it doesn't seem right that an Adama would be reduced to a back around character.

Giving Credit Where Credit Is Due

"Things We Lock Away" was written by Drew Z. Greenberg. It was directed by Jonas Pate. "Caprica" stars Eric Stoltz, Esai Morales, Polly Walker, Alessandra Torresani, Magda Apanowicz, Sasha Roiz, Paula Malcomson, and Genevieve Buechner.

"Caprica" airs Tuesdays at 10 p.m. ET on Syfy.
