Romulans Confirmed For ENT?

PLUS: Rick Berman talks about 'Nemesis'

Rick Berman is expressing more excitement about both the upcoming movie "Star Trek: Nemesis," and the latest series, "Enterprise." He shared some of that excitement recently with Star Trek: The Magazine.

"we have a wonderful ground sequence that deals with a four-wheel drive futuristic Jeep chase," Berman told the official magazine about the 10th Star Trek film. "We spent eight days shooting that sequence in the desert, and it is pretty spectacular. We are going to see a shuttle that we have never seen before. As far as specific sets, there are going to be some action-oriented locations on the ship (like) the Jefferies Tube and tunnels that have never (been) seen before.

"Everything on the Enterprise has been revamped a little bit. it's been a number of years since we last saw the Enterprise-E, and she has been refitted to some degree and looks a little different. Engineering, the bridge -- it all has a fresh look to it."

Berman said that if fans want to thank someone for bringing the Romulans back to the forefront, they need to thank "Nemesis'" scribe, John Logan.

"I would definitely say that a big reason that the Romulans are a major focus in this film is that John Logan is in love with them," Berman said. "John wrote 'Gladiator,' and he has a certain penchant for an almost Shakespearean classical world that definitely exist in biographies about Presidents or stories about samurai (referring to some of Logan's past work). I think there is some sort of noble quality that he finds in Romulans, and he loves to write about it."

How much will audiences love the Romulans? "Enterprise" fans might soon find out.

"Well, in ('Star Trek: First Contact,') the Vulcans were the ones who made first contact with humanity, so it seemed a logical step that a 100 years go by and the ones who are kind of frustrating us by slowly giving out small bits of information would be the Vulcans," Berman said. "They are not villains, they are just mild irritants to us. I would not be surprised that, within the next 6 to 12 months, we will have our first run-in with Romulans."

If you think Berman misspoke about the appearance of Romulans, who humans nor Vulcans see before Capt. Kirk, read on.

"We are shooting a show with the Ferengi right now," Berman said. "We are going to see the Andorians again in a show that will broadcast soon (the already-aired 'Shadows of P'Jem'). And as I said earlier, I also think we will undoubtedly be running into Romulans at some point."

While the Chicago Sun-Times has reported that "Star Trek: Nemesis" has a Nov. 22 release date, Berman (as of the Star Trek: The Magazine interview) wasn't so sure.

"I keep reading about other movies -- whether it's James Bond or Harry Potter or the next 'Lord of the Rings.' I keep reading about movies that are opening around Thanksgiving or Christmas. As to when the studio is going to release the film is hard to say."

Does that mean it could get pushed back into 2003?

"I don't think so," Berman said.
