Two Strips Of Latinum: No Ordinary Show
The newest addition to ABC's lineup leaps over the tall building of doubt with a single bound
This column contains possible spoilers for the pilot episode of "No Ordinary Family" on ABC.
One of the shows I've been curious about while watching advertising for the now launched fall television season has been one of ABC's new additions, No Ordinary Family.
Now, I'll level with everyone. When I saw the advertising, two things kept echoing in my mind. The first thing was that it sounded like a ripoff of the Fantastic Four. The second was that it was going to be a live-action version of The Incredibles.
The show centers around an apparently ordinary family, living an ordinary life with many of the problems that occurs in families. In an attempt to bring the family together, Dad decides to turn Mom's research trip to Brazil into a family vacation.
While on the trip, the family's sightseeing plane crashes into a river filled with phosphorescent particles. Later, after the family returns home, the four of them begin to exhibit very unusual abilities. Dad has super strength, can leap over skyscrapers, can catch bullets, and is almost bulletproof. Mom has developed super speed. The daughter can read minds, and the son is showing super mind abilities.
That is where the similarities to the characters I mentioned in the first paragraph ends and the magic that is No Ordinary Family begins. Dad begins to get bit by the superhero bug (with Michael Chiklis playing the dad, who didn't see that coming), and seeks the help of a trusted friend, while Mom, who is a scientist, is trying to understand what has happened to all of them. The kids, are, well ... are reacting like teenagers might react to something like this.
What separates this show from others is the fact that the show takes a page out of the Eureka and Warehouse 13 manuals and plays the show as a drama/comedy show (or dramedy if you will). Between the comic moments and the drama, there is a good story, a great plot line developing, and a cast that is showing the beginnings of a real chemistry between them.
The one strike against the show is that many are going to think as I did about it and, unlike me, not take the time to check it out. One can only hope that word-of-mouth will spread and cause folks to check out this very entertaining and delightful hour of pure escapist entertainment every Tuesday night. Folks, if you have a conflict with another show, I've got three letters for you: DVR.
As I said, I started the show with the ideas I stated. I came away with the feeling that the show is "fantastic" and has an incredible possibility of being the sleeper hit of this television season. It is definitely worth the time to either watch in on Tuesday nights, or DVR it till you can.
