Artistic License: Costuming At Dragon*Con

As always, one of the delights of attending Dragon*Con is to see the various costumes

Writing about comics and gaming for Airlock Alpha, it was great to have the chance to attend Dragon*Con in Atlanta again this year. The fans of these worlds are always a pleasure to see and meet.

Costuming is very much an art form. I certainly don't have any talent in that area, but like most people, I can appreciate the results of all the hard work that goes into the wonderful costumes I see every year. While television and movie characters are popular, some of the best costumes often come from the pages of comics and books, and the screens of games.

From perennial favorites like Superman, Batman, and Spider-Man to more off the wall choices such as Dr. Horrible and Captain Hammer, a Gothic Wonder Woman, and a Superman/Wonder Woman combination, many parts of the world of comics were represented at the convention. There was even a group of people dressed as characters from their favorite webcomic, showing how much they have become part of the culture.

While Star Trek and Star Wars costumes are always popular, some of the best I saw over the weekend were from the world of Harry Potter. Naturally there were several Harrys and Dumbledores, but also in attendance were Bellatrix, Luna, Sirius Black actually on the poster, and Fred and George as they are at the end of Book 7. Kids and adults alike seem to enjoy entering the magical world, and many of the costumes were outstanding.

Gamers showed their costuming talents as well. World of Warcraft was well represented, as well as classics such as Super Mario Bros. There also were plenty of costumes from the traditional world of Dungeons and Dragons.

One of the most popular costumes of the weekend was that of Codex, from The Guild. Several ladies dressed in the outfit from Do You Want to Date My Avatar and there was even a baby in that costume.

In upcoming columns, I'll have more to say about Dragon*Con. I'll also post pictures to the Internet once we have gotten home and I have selected the best images from the weekend.

If you have never experienced Dragon*Con, I highly recommend it. While this year was the 24th year for the convention, there is always something different to see, and you will have memories that will last a lifetime.
