Two Strips Of Latinum: Atlanta, There Be Dragons There
Labor Day weekend is bringing with it the annual mega geek gathering at Bad Street, Atlanta
Labor Day weekend is upon us and with it, the annual science-fiction/fantasy spectacular in Atlanta known as Dragon*Con.
This annual event, one of the biggest gatherings for fans of multiple genres from Star Trek to Star Wars, from Ghost Hunters to "Mythbusters," from "Eureka" to "Warehouse 13," just to name a few.
Last year's convention was marked by its attempt to make the "Guinness Book of World Records" by having the largest group of people dancing to Michael Jackson's Thriller. While the 903 individuals (of which Jill and I were two of the number) did not make the Guinness record, we did make the "Record Holder's Republic Book" for their record.
Apparently last year was so much fun that there will be not one, but three attempts to make the Guinness Book this year. One attempt will be to break the record recently set by the Las Vegas Star Trek Convention for the most people dressed up as Star Trek characters. The current record is set at 543, but there is concern if the record will be broken, as a world premiere of a movie featuring the voices of many of the Star Trek cast of actors will occur at the same time, giving Trekkies a very hard decision on which to attend.
The second world record attempt will be for the largest number of people dressed as superheroes. For this one, they are pulling out the stops and bringing in the big guy himself. One of the individuals who will be in attendance will be Brandon Routh, who played Superman in Superman Returns. I have not heard if he will be in costume or not. If he does, that will make a record breaking just that much sweeter.
The third attempt will be for the largest gathering of people in Steampunk attire. According to Dragon*Con's website, this one hasn't gotten the Guinness Book's OK yet, but are they going to let that stop them? The folks at Dragon*Con are firm believers in never say never.
Dragon*Con is truly one of the most unique conventions in the world. I often tell folks that you don't attend Dragon*Con, you experience it. With 35 different tracks of fandom, each with something going on all the time, spread out over four hotels makes for one incredible non-stop weekend of fun, partying, fellowship, partying, hookups, partying ... oh, did I say, partying?
This event is so diverse that even pro wrestling fans get into the act with a Friday night of professional wrestling in the ballroom of the Hyatt, featuring wrestlers from multiple wrestling alliances, including appearances from wrestlers with TNA sometimes. It is always a wild night, sometimes too wild as the case of 2008 when one wrestler put another's head through the ballroom wall. Needless to say, the Hyatt management was not very pleased.
One event I always love to attend is the annual Buffy/Dr. Horrible sing along. In this event, the Once More With Feeling episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog are presented on a big screen, with people dressed up as the characters and acting out the show along with the video while the audience sings along with the songs. Last year's presentation was graced with the presence of Dr. Horrible's Felicia Day, which was truly a treat for all attending.
I will be tweeting from the convention starting Thursday during the annual lines to pick up the badges and meeting up with folks preparing for the formal launch of the event of Friday morning. You can follow me by checking out my Twitter page. I also will report events in my Monday and Wednesday columns next week, along with news items if something major breaks.
If you are coming, and you spot a gray-haired guy with a Disney World backpack on, come up and say hi as it will probably be me. I would be delighted to meet readers of this column and of the website.
See you in Atlanta!
