Adaptation Addict: Special Summer Movie Commentary
Some of them met expectations while others failed to live up to their originals
This summer seems to have offered more movies I wanted to see than the past couple of summers. Many of my most-anticipated movies were adaptations taken from comics, older movies, books, or television.
Recently, I finally joined the rest of America in watching and loving the movie "Inception," which brought a major question to my mind: With all of the attention given to a movie with refreshingly new ideas, are movie adaptations doomed?
In order to answer this question, I thought I would run down some of summer 2010's movie adaptations and give a few thoughts.
Clash of the Titans - This movie looked like it could really rival its originator due to the advancement of CGI abilities. Unfortunately, it failed to bring some of the cult magic of the original simply from a very faulty plot and hardly any nod to the original.
Iron Man 2 - While the special effects remained top notch, I think that there was too much connection given to the future adaptations of the Avenger series, and not enough of the flawed Tony Stark that made the first movie extraordinary.
Twilight: Eclipse - Since the book was the best out of the entire series, it did not surprise me that this was the best of the movies so far. With strong plot lines, a strong adaptation of the large book into a two-hour movie, and strong action, the movie was a good adaptation as well as a good summer action flick.
Prince of Persia: Sands of Time - It is hard to represent gaming narrative in a movie, and this movie definitely showcased that difficulty. How many stereotypes or predictable plot points can one movie feature?
The Last Airbender - I really wanted to like this film. I don't think it deserved as much criticism since viewers like myself who were not familiar with the television cartoon could see the movie from fresh eyes. However, the movie lacked, but I really don't know exactly what the missing element was.
The Sorcerer's Apprentice - If you go into a Disney movie expecting a Disney movie, is it really that bad to have as much cheese factor as a bowl of macaroni and cheese? It was exactly as it was advertised, so I was neither disappointed nor blown away.
Scott Pilgrim vs. The World - I am a huge fan of the director and have been following the progress of this movie faithfully on Twitter. I think this is the winner for the best summer movie adaptation for 2010. It brings the laughter, the sarcasm, and an atmosphere that lost nothing from the change from graphic novel to the screen.
These are not all of the adaptations, but they are the ones that grabbed my attention either from satisfaction or from disappointment. Of course, the best moment of watching the later movies was to finally see the trailers for the last Harry Potter movies. Now that's the movie adaptations that I cannot wait to see!
What movie adaptations did I miss or that you saw that deserve some attention?
