'Mega Python Vs. Gatoroid' Sends '80s Pop Stars Into Feud
New Syfy original movie will put Tiffany head-to-head with Debbie Gibson
"Mega Shark Vs. Giant Octopus" was among the most surprising successes of 2009 ... although not for the reasons you might think.
Its visual effects were basic and almost laughable and the story was virtually non-existent, yet it is somehow watchable for the simple premise: A mega shark fights a giant octopus. Now, several other studios are hoping to replicate its DVD success and create another cult favorite movie.
Syfy in particular has become smitten with the "Vs" concept and has already green lit several other monster mash-ups, including "Dinocroc Vs. Supergator" and also "Sharktopus." And, the cable channel has now announced a third title that fits into the same sub-genre.
"Mega Python Vs. Gatoroid" is slated to go into production later in the year and is eyeing a 2011 release as one of the channel's original movies. Set in the Florida Everglades, giant pythons are threatening the local alligator population.
Eighties pop star Tiffany has both been cast in the Saturday night movie as a conscientious park ranger who takes it upon herself to find a solution to the growing troubles in the bayou.
And she isn't alone now.
Debbie Gibson also has been cast, and will head into a face-off with Tiffany as her actions cause the crisis in the first place. Playing an animal rights activist, Gibson releases several exotic snakes into the wild and once deep in the Everglades, grow to an unbelievable size.
Both singers will be treading in familiar territory, however, after having already participated in similar movies in the past. Gibon held the lead role in "Mega Shark Vs. Giant Octopus" and Tiffany appeared in "Mega Piranha." Unlike those two projects, though, this one will have something of a special thrill to it ... it sends to the two of them against each other on screen.
"I know that pop culture fanatics have been dying for Tiffany and me to collaborate for the past 24 years," Gibson said, in a release. "What better way to do it than by battling each other in a campy romp through the Everglades?
Tiffany also is keen to see the finished product, explaining that this is something of a dream come true.
Only in my dreams have I been able to have a catfight with Debbie Gibson...until now," she said. "This is so mega cool!"
"Mega Python Vs. Gatoroid" was written by Naomi Selfman and will be directed by Mary Lambert.
