Combs to play a Ferengi

PLUS: Trek alum Clint Howard returns

Jeffrey Combs will be making his third appearance in "Enterprise," but as he has done in other series like "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine," you'll be seeing him in more than one character.

And like the days of old where he played the Vorta Weyoun and the Ferengi Brunt, Combs recently told AntonyF at TrekWeb that he will be balancing his Andorian regular character with a Ferengi again.

"I was thrilled to be asked to return as Shran, the Andorian," Combs said. "I was especially pleased that it was so soon after the first episode. I look forward to seeing the show. It's a cool one. It airs Feb. 6, I'm told."

Combs said he'll be playing a Ferengi character in the upcoming episode "Acquisition." He said he didn't imagine at all he would be playing a Ferengi again.

"The Ferengi opportunity came out of nowhere, it took me completely by surprise," he said. "My first reaction to the role was, frankly, confusion. What were the Ferengi doing back there in that time? Were they asking me to do a Brunt-type character or what? Well, all questions were answered and it turned out just great. The work was a challenge in that my character was worlds away from Brunt. It's a lovely script and I think the episode is going to be quite entertaining and surprisingly touching."

Not only did Combs confirm that Ethan Phillips (Neelix, "Star Trek: Voyager") would be making an appearance in that episode, but that another familiar face will be there as well: Clint Howard.

The brother of actor/director Ron Howard, Clint was first seen as the young boy Balock in "The Corbomite Maneuver" as well as Grady in the DS9 episode "Past Tense: Part II."

"He has a long lineage with Star Trek," Combs said.

That episode is expected sometime this spring.
