Artistic License: The Guild Comic Delivers Again

Second issue is another great one

When television shows, movies, games and similar franchises meet comic books, it can be a great thing ... or it can be a major mess. This week, the second issue (of three) of The Guild comic was released by Dark Horse Comics, and I think it was definitely great.

Written by Felicia Day, writer/creator/star of the web series, the comic certainly has the correct voice for all the characters, which is very important when dealing with licensed properties. Day has done a wonderful job with the transformation of the show to a comic format.

This issue picks up right where the last one ended, and we see quite a bit more of Cyd's boyfriend, Trevor. Theirs was definitely a flawed relationship. It is very easy to see how Cyd ended up in the situation she is when the web series starts, and that is a main part of the concept of this story.

The other main aspect directly involves the game. We are seeing Cyd learn more about the game, and start to become comfortable as her character, Codex. In the first issue, we saw Codex meet Bladezz and Vork, and in this issue the rest of the group is introduced. It is great to see how these different people started to come together to form The Knights of Good.

Jim Rugg's artwork is well done, and I especially like the way that the panels depicting the game differ in look from those for real life. The only problem I have is that the game scenes are not quite as majestic as I had hoped. Particularly when compared to the cover, by Matthew Stawicki (which is beautifully done, with the characters wearing the costumes from the video), the game art was slightly disappointing. (I should note there is an alternate cover by Kristian Donaldson, which is also nice, but I prefer the main cover.))

Overall, another great issue. Seeing the origin of the guild is nice, and helps give a background for the series. The weak link is the in-game art, but it is still nice to see action inside the game, which cannot be done in the series.

If you are a fan of The Guild, definitely worth your time. For those with compatible devices, issue No. 1 also is available from iTunes for 99 cents, and I believe the other two issues will be available in the future. Now we just have to wait for issue No. 3!
