Fire Severely Damages Harry Potter Sets

UPDATE: Warner Bros. downplays severity of fire

Updated 3/22/2010

It took more than 40 minutes for fire crews to extinguish flames engulfing Leavesden Studios near Watford, United Kingdom, Friday, causing an undisclosed amount of damage to the Hogwarts sets used for the Harry Potter film series.

Warner Bros., which is producing the film, wouldn't elaborate on the extent of the damage, only to say that production is "going ahead," according to News of the World. No one was injured, and the movie's main stars of Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson reportedly were not involved in the scenes being shot.

Although initial reports said the fire was destructive, Warner Bros. told SciFi Wire that it's not as bad as fans were being led to believe.

The fire was caused by pyrotechnic effects used as part of a battle scene at Hogwarts for "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows," but it was "put out almost immediately" by crews on the set. Local fire departments were called out, but only as a precaution, studio executives said.

Everyone was able to get out safely.

"We were shooting the scenes where Hogwarts gets blown up in battle," a source told News of the World. "But fire managed to catch hold of the set and it went up in flames. It was completely out of control at one point."

Although there are typically risks in doing pyrotechnics of this level, major fires like this shouldn't result, the source said.

"The special effects guys involved are devastated," the source said.

"The Deathly Hallows," based on the final book in the Harry Potter series, has been split into two movies, both being directed by David Yates. They are scheduled for a 2011 release.
