'Game Of Thrones' Catelyn Stark Recast
HBO decides to bring Michelle Fairley on board
Recasting sometimes happens between a pilot and a regular series, and the new HBO series "Game of Thrones" is apparently not above it.
Jennifer Ehle has been replaced by Michelle Fairley to play Catelyn Stark, wife of Eddard Stark (played by "Lord of the Rings" actor Sean Bean) in what HBO is calling a casting tweak.
The premium cable channel made it clear the change had nothing to do with Ehle's acting ability, but simply a desire to go in a different direction when it comes to the matriarch of the family that gets involved in the royal shenanigans based on the George R.R. Martin book series.
Catelyn, according to The Hollywood Reporter, was originally betrothed to Eddard's older brother. However, when that brother is killed, she instead marries the younger brother, securing an alliance between their two houses.
Fairley is slated to appear in the final two Harry Potter movies, "The Deathly Hallows," next year as Mrs. Granger, the mother of Hermione, one of the heroines in the J.K Rowling series played by Emma Watson. She also played Mrs. Marlish in the 2001 thriller "The Others."
Production on the new series will begin this summer in Belfast, including some reshoots of the pilot allowing Fairley to be inserted into the story.
"Game of Thrones" was created for television by David Benioff and Dan Weiss. Other cast members include Lena Headey ("Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles"), Mark Addy ("Robin Hood"), Nikolaj Coster-Waldau ("Virtuality") and Peter Dinklage ("Threshold").
