Syfy Firmly Backs Online Games
Network will launch a new gaming website in the spring with new and existing titles
You may think of Syfy as the destination of science-fiction television, but now it will be the home of sci-fi gaming as well.
Syfy has announced a string of new online games that will be added to its Web site, many of which have been inspired by the biggest names in the genre. The channel hopes to establish the gaming site as a global destination for gamers, including casual players as well as the most hardcore massive multi-player game fans.
The SyfyGames.com Web site will launch in the spring, and will include games based on "Terminator Salvation" and "War of the Titans."
Launching Syfy Games is the next logical evolution of our successful online gaming portfolio, which is already the No. 1 section of Syfy.com, Engler said. We'll be adding both casual and massively multiplayer games as well as features that let gamers around the world connect and play with one another, whether their novices or hardcore enthusiasts.
Back in 2008, when it was still going by the name SciFi Channel, Syfy established its site as a multi-platform entertainment destination, with the gaming section of its site becoming the highest trafficked section. Syfy games have partned with some big names in the industry, including Big Point Interactive and Acclaim, to develop new titles.
These new titles will encompass new and unique games as well as some based on the channels existing properties. Universal Partnerships & Licensing, a division of NBC Universal, has already announced plans to launch a Battlestar Galactica massively multiplayer online game later in the fall.
That game is being developed by Artplant, a Norwegian development studio specializing in 3-D MMOs.
