Joshua Gates Vs. Hunted Creature? Think 'Blair Witch Project'

Host of Syfy's 'Destination Truth' Thursday's guest on Alpha Waves Radio

Joshua Gates and his small investigative crew have traveled all around the world seeking some of legend's most infamous creatures and supernatural beings on Syfy's "Destination Truth."

After three seasons, he has yet to come face-to-face with the hunted. And if he did, expect fireworks ... and not the good kind.

"As long as the channel could recover the footage," it would be Syfy's greatest outing of the hit travel investigate show, Gates told Alpha Waves Radio in a segment airing March 11 at 8 p.m. ET. "They would find a bunch of dead camera operators on the ground, and it would be like the final frames of the 'Blair Witch Project.'"

But the question of what would happen if Gates and the "Destination Truth" crew did actually find, say Bigfoot or Loch Ness, has come up many times. And the resulting feeling is, "Let's just hope they're fans of the show."

"That's something we talk about a lot, sometimes on camera but a lot of times off camera," Gates said. "We're in these tropical environments, and if you take any shot of the crew and pan left to right, you're not going to see 50 people standing there with a guy with an elephant rifle. What you see is what you get.

"We have some close calls this season with wildlife, and if it does happen, that may end up being our greatest and final episode."

Outside of encounters with deadly beasts it doesn't look like "Destination Truth" is going away any time soon. The back half of Season 3 kicks off March 17 at 10 p.m. ET on Syfy, and Gates' humor and sense of adventure has grown the audience for "Destination Truth" past the 2 million mark this season.

"We tried to push the envelope a little bit this season," Gates said. "One of the things that really works in our favor is that we are a very small group of people, and that has been one of the real good tentpoles of 'Destination Truth.' This is not a gigantic production. We travel around the world and we bring the viewer with us."

One of the first stops "Destination Truth" makes when it returns next week is Masada, a mesa in the middle of the deserts in Israel where Jews more than 2,000 years ago tried to fend off the Roman army, only to end their battle in a mass suicide.

Getting to Masada is not easy, and not just in terms of getting from the airport there. Spending the night alone is not something the government there grants to just anybody, and in fact, Gates' team is probably one of the first to get to spend the night on the site trying to track some of the reported paranormal activity there.

"This is a really holy place," Gates said. "There are sensitivities to the way you conduct yourself."

It's a busy season for "Destination Truth" this year, and Gates can't wait to share some of the details. Hear the complete 35-minute interview on Alpha Waves Radio beginning at 8 p.m. ET at AlphaWavesRadio.com.

Then stay tuned after the show for the premiere of Alpha Waves Rewind, a live call-in show featuring host Tony Tellado where he will take listener phone calls about the Alpha Waves Radio podcast they just heard, what's happening in the news, or anything else falling into the realm of science-fiction, horror, comic books, fantasy and more.

For those who can't hear the live stream of Alpha Waves Radio and the live broadcast of Alpha Waves Rewind, both will be available in archive form for free at AlphaWavesRadio.com or by visiting Apple's iTunes Store.

"Destination Truth" airs Wednesdays at 10 p.m. ET on Syfy.
