Syfy.com Readies Battlestar Galactica MMO

UPDATE: Series will focus on Syfy version of series

Move over Star Trek Online ... it looks like Battlestar Galactica wants to intrude on your turf.

Universal Partnerships & Licensing, a division of Battlestar Galactica franchise owner NBC Universal, is planning to launch a Battlestar Galactica massively multiplayer online game on Syfy.com this fall.

"Battlestar Galactica is a supremely gameable intellectual property, with compelling character classes, a fantastic array of ships and weaponry, multiple worlds and a dramatic storyline," said Bill Kispert, a vice president and general manager of UP&L, in a release.

The game will focus on the Syfy version of "Battlestar Galactica" that premiered as a miniseries in 2003. UP&L will work with Bigpoint -- a company that has already been working closely with Universal Cable Productions and Syfy -- to bring the "BSG experience to fans of the franchise and online gamers alike."

It is being developed by Artplant, a Norwegian development studio specializing in 3-D MMOs.

Megumi Ikeda from NBC Universal's strategic venture capital arm, Peacock Equity Fund, investors in Bigpoint, said, "Our investment strategy is to help high-growth companies like Bigpoint that can also drive growth for NBCU, so we're excited to see this collaboration working so well."

When the game is released this summer, BSG Online will be playable on Web browers on Syfylcom for a 30-day period where gamers can join as a human or a Cylon.

"Battlestar Galactica has a huge and passionate fan base," said Heiko Hubertz, the chief executive and founder of Bigpoint, in a release. "We are proud to be able to publish such an internationally famous title as one of our online games. For the first time ever, we are relying completely on Unity in order to offer our users fantastic game graphics right in their browsers."

While other details of the game were not made available, it's unlikely BSG Online will be as deeply created as recent titles such as Star Trek Online, mainly because MMORPGs typically take years to develop, and not months as seems to be the case with BSG Online.

In any event, a virtual online battlestar is coming to a Web browser near you this summer. For details and the ability to sign up for updates on the game's development, click here.
