'Chuck' - Chuck Versus the Beard

It's bizarro day. Chuck is no longer a spy, and Jeffster leads a mutiny (at the Buy More).

It's bizarro day. Chuck is no longer a spy, and Jeffster leads a mutiny (at the Buy More).

This review may contain spoilers.

"Chuck Versus the Beard" managed to do something this current season of 'Chuck' hadn't quite been able to do yet -- it brought back the concept that Buy More is a (rather humorous) thorn in the side of Chuck Bartowski's (Zachary Levi) super spy life.

Sure, working at the Buy More has always given Chuck a bit of a problem when it comes to making time for spy work, but episodes like this one and last season's "Chuck Versus Santa Claus" offer the perfect blend of Chuck's two careers.

The episode also did something that could make or break the show; it had Chuck revealing the truth about everything. I imagined it as being the same as the "Here's what you missed," only over the span of two and a half seasons to Morgan (Joshua Gomez) and ultimately bringing his buffoon of a best friend into his spy world.

Now Morgan being in on the secret of Chuck could either lead to something hilarious in a kid in a candy story way or something just plain annoying a la first season Morgan, because as Casey reminded Chuck, "Awesome's awesome. Grimes is a moron." If anything, Morgan's involvement in Chuck's spy life will bring us a less mopey third season Chuck Bartowski.

What Worked

Jeffster! Even the best episode of "Chuck" can be made ten times better by the appearance of Jeffster (Scott Krinsky and Vik Sahay), especially a Jeffster musical montage. Kudos to Phil Klemmer for writing a ridiculously awesome episode made even more ridiculously awesome by including the musical stylings of Jeffster.

So far, this current season of 'Chuck' has been rather angsty, and for a show that bills itself a spy "comedy," that's not really a good thing. The way that Morgan took the truth about Chuck's spy life was both a relief and perfectly true to the character. On any other show, it would have been perfectly normal for Morgan to get upset by Chuck's deception. On 'Chuck,' he's in nerd heaven. It was true to the character and true to the very nature of the series - and it was just plain adorable. Hopefully this leads the bromance of Chuck and Morgan back on the right track.

Also, this is just an observation, but Zachary Levi was very lucky to be given such an amusing, substantial episode to make his directorial debut.

What Didn't Work

Do Awesome (Ryan McPartlin) and Ellie (Sarah Lancaster) ever even go to the hospital anymore? Clearly the writers remember these characters' profession (the Doctors Without Borders line), but what happened to the days when Awesome and Ellie would show up in their scrubs, or do anything other than constantly "getting away" or worry about Chuck.

Giving Credit Where Credit Is Due

"Chuck" stars Zachary Levi, Yvonne Strahovski, Joshua Gomez, Mark Christopher Lawrence, Scott Krinsky, Vik Sahay, Ryan McPartlin, Sarah Lancaster, Adam Baldwin. "Chuck Versus the Beard" was written by Phil Klemmer and directed by Zachary Levi.

"Chuck" airs Mondays at 8 p.m. on NBC.
