Review: Latest 'Battlestar' Album Release A Worthy Companion
Bear McCreary puts out what could be his final album based on the acclaimed series
When the soundtrack to the fourth and final season of Battlestart Galactica was released last year, many fans probably thought their BSG musical collection was complete. If so, they were wrong.
As of Feb. 23, BSG fanatics can now pick up a yet another album from composer Bear McCreary. However, rather than featuring music from the series, this latest release combines selections from the television films Razor and The Plan.
BSG fans know that McCreary is a gifted composer, and here he delivers a dazzling amalgamation of strings and percussion that punctuates the drama and mystery of both the series and the films in which the music is featured.
Originally airing on Syfy in the fall of 2007, Razor tells the story of a terrifying Cylon attack from the perspective of Officer Kendra Shaw (Stephanie Jacobsen). Meanwhile, The Plan -- originally released on DVD in 2009 - - examines the Cylon plot to destroy humanity, giving fans a much-anticipated peek into the inner workings of the Cylon leaders.
The album begins with the guitar riffs of Apocalypse (Theme from The Plan), instantly evoking the epic scale that is the trademark of BSG. It is among the albums many standouts and nicely showcases McCrearys ability to effortlessly infuse emotion into his music.
Other notable tracks include the adventure and intrigue of Attack on the Scorpion Shipyard and Pegasus Aftermath.
A bonus live version of the first track rounds out the album, and while it somehow manages to be even more arresting than the studio version, this is a bittersweet thrill, one that will only make fans wish they could attend one of the acclaimed BSG concerts that McCreary has been known to perform on occasion (mostly on the west coast).
Just as Razor and The Plan expand the BSG universe, their soundtrack adds layers to its musical counterpart while neatly fitting alongside the established BSG themes. Although McCreary is keeping busy these days composing music from television series like Human Target and BSG spinoff Caprica, hardcore fans will surely miss his distinctive contribution to Battlestar itself.
This album release serves as a worthy encore to the musical universe of BSG, as always, leaving fans wanting more and further affirming the mastery of this universe that McCreary has demonstrated time and again.
