Family Mourns Passing Of Andrew Koenig

Body of missing actor found in Vancouver park

The worst fears of the Koenig family were realized Thursday when the body of a 41-year-old man police say is Andrew Koenig was found in a Vancouver park where he was last seen just after Valentine's Day.

Walter Koenig, whom fans know as Pavel Chekov in "Star Trek," confirmed the news Thursday night at a press conference. "My son took his own life," Koenig told reporters at the conference, according to TrekMovie.

A body was reportedly found in Stanley Park, where the Koenigs had reported on Walter's official Web site all week that Andrew was last seen. The younger Koenig was suffering from clinical depression, according to the family, and was believed to have turned down a couple of jobs and either sold or given away many of his possessions before traveling to Toronto, and later Vancouver, which he considered a second home.

Andrew is probably best known for playing Boner in "Growing Pains," but has worked extensively on other projects, including "21 Jump Street" and "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine." Before his apparent suicide, Koenig reportedly wrote a letter to his father, letting him know that he was off his anti-depressants, and proving a very "despondent" tone, according to the family.

The Koenigs traveled to Vancouver Tuesday to help in the search for their son. They, however, maintained that there was not any specific incident that prompted Andrew's disappearance, according to the family's official Web site.

"I think it's something that has been a part of his makeup for a long time," Walter said in a statement earlier this week. "There's no single trauma. There's no episode. There's nothing of that nature. He's trying to get ahead in this business, and he's been working at it a long time.

"I only want to say he's a really good person, a great humanitarian. Everyone who knew him was very fond of him."

The Koenigs were scheduled to appear on "Larry King Live" on CNN Wednesday night in a live broadcast from their hotel room, but pulled out after being pushed back several times because of a whale attack at a SeaWorld in Orlando, according to TMZ. Koenig reportedly said he didn't feel there would be enough time to properly explain the circumstances surrounding their son's disappearance, and to plead for a safe return.

The Koenigs asked the CNN crew that came to their hotel room to depart, which they did.

Andrew Koenig was born Aug. 17, 1968 in Los Angeles, the son of Walter Koenig and Judy Levitt.
