SciFi On TV: A Comic Geek Has His Moment

Justice Society of America finally comes to 'Smallville'

Everyone here knows me as a sci-fi nerd, having been a fan of the genre since my youngest memories. But I have also been a fan of DC Comics for almost as long. And my favorite comic characters have always been the Justice Society of America.

Now being a fan of these characters for decades, you can imagine my reaction when I learned last summer that they would be guest starring on Smallville. I read all the interviews and watched all the trailers.

And I did something I almost never do. I watched "Smallville" live. I have a TiVo, and usually watch "Smallville" over the weekend after it airs. But this time I couldnt wait.

I am extremely familiar with JSA lore, and even though this episode didnt follow it exactly, it was still the JSA. The JSA in the comic books started their careers in 1940 while this JSA appears to have their careers start during the 1970s. It was an understandable updating for the "Smallville" universe.

Now I dont intend to give a review of the episode, but just my feelings about it. Here were a few of my favorite characters appearing live, for the first time. I was in full geek mode. I almost wished the "Smallville" characters were absent this episode, because I felt the character of Clark made the episode drag.

One of the best points about the episode was seeing superheroes in costumes. The producers of "Smallville" have enforced a "no tights - no flights" rule for eight seasons, and it was heaven to see superheroes actually looking like superheroes.

I have to say the writers knew their audience well. They filled the script with JSA references and back-story, enough that even a non-fan should have been able to connect with these heroes. They gave us Carters reincarnation background, a mention of Fates wife and Courtneys stepfather. They even gave us a cameo of Ma Hunkel, the original Red Tornado.

The villain chosen was lame, and he really didnt need five heroes to take him down. If there was one thing really wrong with the story, it was the lack of a credible villain.

I really enjoyed the show, which has been a miracle for me. I have been watching "Smallville" out of boredom if nothing else. This episode sparked some interest in me. I hope it can keep the momentum going.

And above all, I really hope to see the JSA on "Smallville" again.
