'Spidey 4' Deal Is Finalized With New Director
Villains will take a back seat to teenage angst
Not too long ago, Sam Raimi would helm and Tobey Maguire was planning to swing from rooftops.
Well, times change.
As previously reported, "Spider-Man 4" will be a complete reboot for the franchise and told in a slightly harsher, "Dark Knight" style fashion. Leading the way as director for what will doubtlessly become another franchise in its own right is Marc Webb who garnered substantial praise for his interpretation of modern romance in "500 Days of Summer." So much so that he may be the perfect person to inject new life into the Peter Parker/Mary-Jane saga.
At least that's what Marvel believes.
Webb has now bowed out of several projects from Fox in order to accept the deal offered by Columbia to proceed with the latest in the Spider-Man franchise.
Now that Webb has finalized a deal to helm the new Spider-Man movie, his talents in portraying reality will definitely become one of the key selling points of the movie thanks to its modest budget of $80 million. The first Spider-Man launched by Raimi made do with $139 million, a number which grew with each sequel.
Fans of the web-slinging adventures of the comics, however, may be left disappointed. According to The Hollywood Reporter, this new series of movies will be based on the recent "Ultimate Spider-Man" comic series which focused more on the teenage angst of school life rather than saving the world from bizarre villains.
Sound a little like Twilight yet?
The movie will go into production later in 2010 and is expected to swing into theaters in Summer 2012.
