'Avatar' Wins Third Straight Weekend, Continues To Fill Seats

James Cameron film is believed to have reached $1 billion mark worldwide

There seems to be little to slow down "Avatar" as it has roared to the top of the box office for the third consecutive week.

The James Cameron film set 150 years in the future where humans control puppet bodies of a native alien race with a rich culture, earned $68.3 million over the New Year's weekend, losing just 10 percent of its audience from the week before. Having a 10 percent loss on the third week is amazing, but even more when considering that "Avatar" didn't have a big fall its second week, but instead went up.

That is also the highest gross ever for a movie in its third week, according to the Los Angeles Times. It easily beat out the previous record of $45 million in the third week set by the original "Spider-Man," a margin so wide that it beats it even when inflation is factored in.

"Avatar" has now earned $352.1 million domestically, putting "Avatar" firmly in 15th place among the top-grossing films of all time (when not accounting for inflation), according to MovieWeb. It's right behind "Jurassic Park" and its box office of $357.1 million, and could easily challenge 2009 winner "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen," which is holding to the No. 9 slot with $402.1 million.

It's not clear when "Avatar" momentum will slow down, but it's still about $80 million off the top five grossing movies of all time, needing at least $435 million to unseat "E.T.: The Extra Terrestrial." However, there are some say it could do it.

One movie it likely won't challenge, despite inflation and much higher ticket prices -- especially when it comes to 3-D premium packages -- is Cameron's most recent film, "Titanic," which had earned $600.8 million following its 1997 release. The closest any film has ever come to that is the "Batman Begins" sequel "The Dark Knight," which earned $533 million at the domestic box office.
