AlphaBits: Paramount Pushing 'Star Trek' For Oscar Nod

PLUS: President Obama fears Terminators?

No one ever thought when Paramount Pictures announced it was doing a new "Star Trek" movie that such a film could ever even begin to be considered for Oscar nomination.

But then again, no one thought the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences would expand its Best Picture nominees to 10.

Paramount isn't letting this one slip away. The studio will send out screeners of three of its films to potential Oscar voters Dec. 8, according to The Los Angeles Times, including J.J. Abrams' recent film, "Up in the Air" and "The Lovely Bones."

Unfortunately, there is a lot of competition for those 10 slots, and "Star Trek" has one disadvantage: It's a space-faring story, and those don't do too well among the Hollywood elite.

However, at the same time, "Star Trek" was one of the best-reviewed movies of 2009, second only to "Up," according to Rotten Tomatoes. So maybe there is enough push there to get it on the final ballot.

Also getting sent out is another critically adored hit, "District 9." -- [Los Angeles Times]

Hasta la vista, Mr. President: Typically, one would think that the economy or overseas wars would keep President Barack Obama up at night. But instead, it's all about "Avatar" director James Cameron and California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Obama, speaking to a high school class in Washington, D.C., joked recently that robots shouldn't be allowed to get out of control.

"As president, I believe that robotics can inspire young people to pursue science and engineering," he said, according to the Daily Telegraph in Great Britain. "And I also want to keep an eye on those robots, in case they try anything."

Obama has never been shy about his love for science-fiction, and even screened "Star Trek" at the White House earlier this year.

And thanks to that genre knowledge, plans to build SkyNet were scrapped earlier this year, allowing Sarah Connor and John Connor to go off and concentrate on something else. -- [Daily Telegraph]

Universal Studios opens Battlestar Galactica ride ... in Singapore: It's about time a rollercoaster is built honoring Battlestar Galactica. The sad part is BSG fans would have to plan a long vacation to get on it: Universal Studios has included the dueling rollercoaster ride as part of its park in Singapore.

It's not clear which incarnation of Battlestar Galactica the ride is supposed to represent, except for the fact that one train would represent humans, and the other Cylons.

A video of the new ride leaked through CNNGO, showing water dummies in the seats that would normally be occupied by humans and skin jobs.

Word is that the Cylons win every single time, thanks to Number Six showing up right at the end, distracting the humans with her beauty. -- [CNNGO]

Radcliffe can't stay dressed: There aren't a lot of horses with gouged-out eyes in the Harry Potter movies, but that won't stop star Daniel Radcliffe from finding a reason to get out of his clothes again.

Radcliffe has apparently filmed a nude scene for the final Harry Potter movies involving Emma Watson's Hermione Granger. It's not clear if Hermione will be in a state of undress as well.

But before people get all worked up over nothing, it's highly unlikely Radcliffe will show anything near what he was doing live on Broadway. And don't forget, he's not a kid anymore -- he's 20 now.

You'll get a chance to see more of Radcliffe for yourself when the two movies are released in 2010 and 2011. -- [SciFi Wire]

Doctor Who On A Medal: It's hard to argue that someday someone should pin a medal to the chest of our favorite Time Lord, The Doctor. But at least for now, fans will have to settle with a medal modeled after the outgoing "Doctor Who" star.

The Royal Mint said it will offer a series of medals that will include David Tennant in the title role along with K-9, the Tardis, and even the Daleks.

Unlike the Franklin Mint in the United States which has associated itself with television for many years, this is actually the first time the Royal Mint has considered doing anything with television, so it decided to start with British icons, apparently.

There might be medals around, but Tennant himself is going fast. His final episodes of "Doctor Who" air later this month and the beginning of the year on BBC and BBC America. -- [BBC News]

Tennant gets help from Mohinder: Speaking of David Tennant, he looks to b getting a little help from "Heroes" as he preps for his American television debut.

Sendhil Ramamurthy, who plays Mohinder Suresh in the NBC show, will join the Tennant pilot "Rex is Not Your Lawyer." Ramamurthy joins Jane Curtin, who also joins the show about a lawyer who suffers from panic attacks whenever he's in a courtroom, and ends up coaching clients to represent themselves in court.

What exactly does this mean for "Heroes"? No decision on that series has been made yet, although reports continue to surface that this could be the show's final season. But it's likely Suresh could make a departure from "Heroes" one way or the other anyway before the end of the season. -- [The Hollywood Reporter]

Is that schizo a Cylon?:Callum Keith Rennie continues to stay busy.

Fresh off a cool guest role on ABC's "FlashForward," the former "Battlestar Galactica" regular is taking the starring role in the new Canadian series "Shattered." The show, about a homicide detective played by Rennie who suffers from multiple personality disorder, is being produced by Force Four Films and E1 Entertainment, the latter company the same one teaming up with Syfy to produce the new Stephen King series "Haven." -- [Variety]

Podcasting has returned: Thursday will mark the official relaunch of Alpha Waves Radio.

The podcast, which can be found at AlphaWavesRadio.com, will air twice monthly, typically Thursdays at 8 p.m. ET. Although there will be a live distribution, the show is also available for free at the site, or through the iTunes Store simply by searching for "Alpha Waves."

The show is hosted by me, and our first official guest for the Dec. 3 episode is Daniel Malen from The TV Addict.

Also joining me during the podcast versions of the show is David Read from GateWorld to help spice things up a little (let's just say that David and I don't agree on a whole lot).

The show, which is now just 60 minutes long compared to its former live version, SyFy Radio, will feature special guests including entertainment writers like Malen as well as actors, writers, producers and the like.

Although the show is now being pre-recorded, there will be occasional live call-in shows called Alpha Waves Live. The first installment of that will run Dec. 9 at 9 p.m. ET at AlphaWavesRadio.com.

In the meantime, Airlock Alpha chief technology officer and former Alpha Waves host from earlier this year, Nick Chase, hosts a retrospective of some of the best interviews from the SyFy Radio days. It's available now both on iTunes and at AlphaWavesRadio.com. -- [Airlock Alpha]
