Opening weekend breaks December records
It was a big box office weekend for "The Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring" as it racked up an estimated $73 million on its opening five-day weekend, putting it on pace to become the biggest movie of the winter season.
The movie has already crossed the $100 million barrier when international totals are added in, as it made $60 million in Europe and New Zealand as well.
The movie made $45.3 million since Friday, making more than enough to stay ahead of "Ocean's Eleven" ($14.6 million) and "Jimmy Neutron" ($14 million). Following up the top 10 were "Vanilla Sky" ($12.1 million), "How High" ($7.6 million), "Harry Potter" ($6.2 million), "Not Another Teen Movie" ($5.5 million), "The Majestic" ($5 million), "Monsters Inc." ($5 million) and "Joe Somebody" ($3.7 million).
