Familiar Heroes Return For A Social Visit On 'Smallville'

Character bursting episode extended to a two-part adventure

This story may contain spoilers.

We've seen the Justice League, we've met the Legion, and now we'll be introduced to a whole other generation of comic book heroes.

When "Smallville" returns after its festive break, The CW series will gear up for an adventure that was so crammed with characters that the producers had to extend it over two episodes. Starting off with "Society," fans will see the introduction of the Justice Society, a group of heroes who have spent several years in retirement.

Among the headliners is Hawkman, who will be played by "Stargate SG-1" star Michael Shanks. He will be joined by former "Andromeda" cast member Brent Staite who takes on the role of Dr. Fate. Also making an appearance is the stunning Britt Irvin as Stargirl.

And, a few familiar faces will also be making an appearance.

Michael Ausiello of Entertainment Weekly is reporting that Phil Morris will return to the show to continue his role as John Jones - otherwise known as the Martian Manhunter. So, with so many faces, it's easy to see why the producers opted to a two-part episode.

To be honest, there were so many characters and so much great story that people wouldve been robbed of some great moments if we kept it to just one hour, producer Kelly Sounders said. So now that its a two-parter, you wont miss anything.

"Society" and "Legends" have both been written by comic book scribe Geoff Johns and are expected to air in January 2010.

"Smallville" airs Fridays at 8 p.m. ET on The CW.
