Baseball Indirectly Boosts 'FlashForward' Thursday

There wasn't a lot of choice, so viewers decided to look for new programming, and found it not only with 'Survivor,' but on ABC

There wasn't a lot of choice, so viewers decided to look for new programming, and found it not only with 'Survivor,' but on ABC

"FlashForward" earned its best audience since its second week, picking up a 6.2 rating/10 share in Fast National ratings from The Nielsen Co.

That's the strongest outing the new show from David S. Goyer and Brannon Braga has done since Oct. 1 when it earned a 6.7/11. It was up nearly 9 percent from the previous week, but still finished third in the hour just behind the American League Championship Series from Major League Baseball and a surging "Survivor."

Speaking of "Survivor," it's not exactly a genre show, but it's really making a killing in the 8 p.m. timeslot on Thursdays for CBS. It earned a 7.7/12 in overnights last night, up more than 8 percent from last week and nearly 15 percent higher than its season premiere Sept. 17.

That reality show has witnessed some heavy renewed interest, especially with the introduction of Russell Hantz as "Survivor's" new villain.

"FlashForward" likely received a boost from the lack of programming on Fox where it had been competing with "Bones." Instead, Fox is showing baseball, and is receiving slightly better ratings in that time period than it did with "Bones" on the air.

Because of baseball, that means there was no "Fringe" to talk about, and some of the other networks decided to air reruns as they prepare for November sweeps. That included reruns for "The Vampire Diaries" and "Supernatural" on The CW as well.

"FlashForward" is still trying to find its place in ABC's overall vision, finishing near the middle of the pack each week for the network. It does remain the highest-rated network genre show, and can boast that 83 percent of its overall audience keeps coming back to watch new episodes each week, according to the BlipNetwork Audience Loyalty Index. (What is ALI?)

Thanks to its other powerhouse shows like "Grey's Anatomy" and "Private Practice," ABC did win Thursday with a 7.5/12, according to Zap2it, beating out CBS and Fox.

Fast Nationals usually provide a snapshot of what Americans are watching by pulling numbers from the top urban markets that includes both live viewing and same-day timeshifted viewing. A rating point generally represents more than 1.1 million households while the share indicates the percentage of televisions turned on that was tuned to the specific program. These numbers typically shift when final ratings are issued.
