SciFriday: Airlock Alpha, Rabid Doll Get Ready For Comic-Con

All the details about our coverage, who will be there, and how you can get instant news!

Who ever thought that such a fun event like San Diego Comic-Con would be so much work?

But it has been. And yeah, it's still a lot of fun.

The BlipNetwork, which includes both Airlock Alpha and our sister horror entertainment news site, Rabid Doll, is making final preparations to head out to California next week for the annual convention, and we're really going all out this year.

We're sending five -- yes, five -- reporters to the convention this year, including me. And thank God, too, because I tried to iron man last year's convention, and I was wiped out before the first day even ended.

This time, I will be attending once again along with our associate news editor Bryant Griffin for the first time, our community engineer Shane Churchman -- who happens to live in San Diego already -- and two of our newer writers, Katie Sawyer and Tiffany Vogt. We already have more than 40 events that we are specifically covering between Thursday and Sunday, and with that, we plan on bringing you uo-to-the-minute news on everything from older shows like "Heroes" on NBC and "Dollhouse" on Fox to the newest and exciting programs like "Stargate: Universe" on Syfy and even the newest AMC series, "The Prisoner."

So yes, whether you are going to be at the convention or not (If you haven't decided yet, it's too late -- tickets are long gone), it won't matter because every bit of news that you want to know about will be found on this very site next week, in most cases within an hour after it happens.

And it's more than just what's shared in the public panels. Airlock Alpha and Rabid Doll have been granted access to a lot of the great writers and actors of the amazing shows we cover, so we'll have exclusive information you can't find anywhere else.

At the same time, all of our writers will be giving instant updates through a very special Twitter account we have set up, which you should start following now @ComicConAA. We'll try to re-Tweet a lot of that stuff with @AirlockAlpha, but why wait? Follow us right now, and know what's happening before anyone else!

We'll be spending a lot of time at panels, but we'll also be at other events, too. Shane and I will be at the first night of the Battlestar Galactica Orchestra concert at the San Diego House of Blues on Thursday evening with maestro (and once again, sadly overlooked by the Emmys) Bear McCreary and hosted by "Battlestar Galactica" star Edward James Olmos. We'll both be in the VIP section, so if you would like to hang with us, get your tickets now by visiting the House of Blues Web site.

Saturday, I will be a lot closer to Entertainment Weekly's annual celebrity bash than I ever have before. For the first time, I actually made the waiting list! My chances of still getting in are about as good as Edward James Olmos and I going bar-hopping after Thursday night's concert, but I did get access to the red carpet, and that's where all the fun is this year anyway.

This year, that party is being jointly hosted by EW and Syfy, so if you're anywhere near this event, see some great people from all your favorite Syfy shows. It should be worth it!

So how do we cover Comic-Con? Well, it's easy. All of our reporters have a set schedule that they'll be covering, and everyone will be carrying Internet-ready laptop (or as we like to call them in Steve Jobs Obsessive Land, MacBooks) and a cell phone. We'll be taking notes throughout the panels and the interview sessions afterward, and at the same time providing instant updates through Twitter. All of us.

We'll be communicating through cell phones and text messaging, and both I -- on the convention floor -- and our news editor, Alan Stanley Blair in Scotland -- will be looking for new stories in the Airlock Alpha and Rabid Doll system, and getting those posted as quickly as possible.

Because the site will be loaded with stories throughout the weekend, and you might not have a chance to read them all before they disappear off the front page, we are setting up a special portal page that will give you a listing of all our coverage at Comic-Con and let you find the stories you want, when you want them.

Of course, we'll still be using some of our traditional ways to get you to headlines and breaking news. Our longtime YahooGroups account at YahooGroups.com/Group/AirlockAlpha will be fired up ready to go, as will our message boards.

Now, I know that some of you reading this plan on being at Comic-Con as well. I know, because you've e-mailed or Tweeted me to tell me, and many of you would like to meet up with me. I am trying to set up a time and place where I can try and say hello to all of you. Unfortunately, it's not something I can plan in advance, since I will be spending the entire convention working.

So what we'll do is when I find a hole in my schedule, I will throw something up on Twitter, so you should start following now! Just to warn you, I'm not all that interesting, and I don't do autographs, haha!

We are dedicated to bringing you the best news all the time, and most especially in our biggest news event of the year, Comic-Con. I just wanted to thank our writers in advance who are giving up their valuable time and a lot of their well-deserved down time to be at this convention and work hard, and I think you'll see the results in these pages in less than a week.

So here it goes. I'll probably wonder how I got myself into this by Thursday night, but the memories and the service we will be providing for you will be well worth it.
