'Up' Passes 'Star Trek' As 2009's Biggest

But 'Transformers' could knock both out after $201M opening ... heck it could happen in just a couple weeks

'Star Trek' had a good run as the top-grossing film of 2009, but it won't be long before it's the third largest.

The Disney/Pixar animated film "Up" surpassed "Star Trek" in total box office Saturday and had a weekend total of $13 million compared to "Star Trek's" $3.6 million. Through Sunday, "Up" has now grossed $250 million while "Star Trek," which this past week became the highest grossing film in franchise history when adjusted for inflation, sat at $246.3 million.

However, it still remains in the top 10 after eight weeks, which is pretty impressive for the film.

"Up's" position at the top won't last long. "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" opened with $201 million over a five-day weekend, and $112 million for the weekend itself, finishing just behind the record set last year by "The Dark Knight," and producing the highest gross ever for a movie that has a rating of no more than 20 percent from Rotten Tomatoes, according to E! Online.

With $201 million already, it would take a miracle dropoff for "Revenge of the Fallen" to not overtake both "Star Trek" and "Up" within the next two weeks if not earlier.

It should also easily eclipse the total box office take of the first "Transformers" in 2007, which pulled in $319.2 million, and is in the top 20 of the highest grossing films of all time. "Star Trek" is closing in on the 49th spot, currently held by "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban." It's expected to now finish with about $261 million, which would have it challenging "The Incredibles" for No. 41 on the MovieWeb list.
