European News Mistakenly Use 'Lost' Plane Crash Images
Thought the photos were of Air France Flight 447
The tragedy of a commercial airliner going down in the Atlantic Ocean is already terrible, but some prankster took advantage of the situation and fooled a couple European news outlets with plane crash photos that were actually scenes from the ABC series "Lost."
According to Gawker, Dutch radio station BNR received footage of wreckage it was told was of Air France Flight 447. BNR told its readers on its Web site that the photos were reliable, and even a Bolivian television station used the images in a video segment that is now circulating the Web.
There are some similarities between Air France Flight 447 and the fictional Oceanic Flight 815 from the series, including the belief that Flight 447 likely broke up mid-air before crashing. Because of that, it's been difficult for rescuers to find wreckage and victims from the flight.
Flight 447 took off from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil June 1 heading to Paris when it crashed into the Atlantis Ocean, killing 216 passengers and 12 crew members. It's the deadliest crash in the airline's history, and its first fatal crash since the one and only Concorde crash in 2000.
