'Wolverine' Earns Sequel As It Readies For 'Star Trek'

Who will end up with the bigger opening after this weekend?

Who will end up with the bigger opening after this weekend?"X-Men: Wolverine" and "Star Trek" are getting ready for an epic battle this weekend when the new crew of the USS Enterprise make their premiere. But no matter what happens, it looks like "Star Trek" isn't the only one with a sequel in the works.

E! Online is reporting that Twentieth Century Fox and Marvel have commissioned a sequel of "Wolverine," as expected. The film earned $87 million domestically in its opening weekend, but $158.2 million worldwide, despite an ongoing swine flu scare, online piracy, and mixed reviews.

The sequel would be the fifth film where Hugh Jackman plays the iconic comic book character. It's expected this next movie, which likely would not interfere with a proposed Magneto standalone film, will utilize a samurai storyline, which was teased at the end of the latest outing.

In the meantime, "Wolverine" has some tough competition this weekend with "Star Trek," and while the J.J. Abrams outing seems to have the immediate advantage, "Wolverine" still has some kick left to it, says Carl DiOrio of The Hollywood Reporter.

"Many industryites suggest that 'Trek' will fall at least a bit short of matching the domestic debut of 'Wolverine' because of a more narrowly drawn fan base for the [Paramount] film," DiOrio said. "Yet, they note that 'Trek' seems to be gaining market momentum, with a definite uptick in awareness and interest among prospective patrons amid roundly positive early reviews."

Also helping "Trek" this weekend is the fact that Paramount has allowed theaters to begin showing the movie at 7 p.m. on Thursday, instead of making them wait for midnight, as "Wolverine" did, which could definitely help get a jump on a more extended weekend and pull in some more money.

Fox distribution president Bruce Snyder remains confident, however.

"Word-of-mouth and female support should carry us, even with a big picture like 'Star Trek' coming to the marketplace," he said. "We should be able to continue our positive run and gross well without disappearing."

All the same, many analysts believe "Wolverine" will fall at least 60 percent from its opening, typical for a movie of its stature and strong opening.

While Jackman is sure to draw the female crowd, "Star Trek" is attracting more males 25 and older, although younger males are starting to take notice of "Trek" just before its release, DiOrio said.

All of this might be moot, even if its opening is smaller than "Wolverine's." Some say Paramount would be happy with a $50 million opening, which would mark the best opening ever for a Star Trek film, but there are still some at the studio who would like to see a $100 million weekend.

"The company's position is that it's just not in the cards," said Don Harris, senior vice president of distribution for Paramount. "But with the Thursday night performances, there should be a good chance of getting excellent word-of-mouth going."

"X-Men Origins: Wolverine" is in theaters now, while "Star Trek" premieres Friday.
