Bruce Greenwood Joins Vulcan Fans For 'Star Trek' Premiere

Paramount adds some star power to its Canadian promotions

The residents of Vulcan, Alberta, may have actor Leonard Nimoy to thank for their special sneak preview screening of "Star Trek XI" in nearby Calgary, but when they arrive to see the latest J.J. Abrams film, they will have a chance to celebrate another actor from the show.

Bruce Greenwood, who plays Capt. Christopher Pike in the movie, will meet with 300 randomly selected residents of Vulcan who are attending the premiere next week.

"With Bruce Greenwood adding some Hollywood glamor to Vulcan's special advance screening of 'Star Trek,' we feel very honored by all that Paramount Pictures is arranging for us," said Dayna Dickens, the tourism coordinator for Vulcan, in a release.

Greenwood, who was born in Canada, is stepping in for Nimoy who had to be in New York the night of the premiere May 6 and was unable to come. Nimoy personally lobbied to Airlock Alpha and other news outlets last month when Vulcan town officials announced a screening they had hoped to do in the hamlet of 2,000 people had to be called off.

"I wish I could be in two places at once," Nimoy said in a release. "I will be in [New York] helping to spread the word about the opening of the film. I am pleased that logic has prevailed and that my Vulcan friends will see the film in Calgary. Live long, enjoy and prosper."

Although the town's name has existed long before "Star Trek," Vulcan adopted the Trek notoriety and has put itself on the map as sort of a geek vacation spot within the Canadian Prairies. Not only does it have a space-themed tourist information center, but it also boasts a 5-ton replica of the USS Enterprise that overlooks the main highway through town.

Vulcan also hosts an annual Star Trek convention called VulCon: Spock Days/Galaxyfest, and draws hundreds of people each year from around the world.

"Star Trek XI" opens worldwide May 8.
