Could 'Star Trek XI' Have Stronger Opening Than 'Wolverine'?
Advance ticket sales seem to be trending that way
There is some concern that the "X-Men Origins" film "Wolverine" is attracting a much younger audience than the new "Star Trek" movie based on pre-sales. But when it comes to actual sales, it looks like the new Kirk and Spock are giving Hugh Jackman a run for his money.
"Wolverine" is actually selling a lot of advance tickets right now, just a week before its May 1 release, already trending well ahead of 2008's opener "Iron Man" by three to one, according to MovieTickets. Those are impressive numbers, especially since "Iron Man" went on to open with $102.1 million, leading to a $318.3 million domestic box office haul, according to Internet Movie Database.
That doesn't mean "Wolverine" will look to match the full "Iron Man" box office in a single weekend, but it could definitely be the first real blockbuster of 2009.
While this is looking to be great news for the fourth film in the X-Men franchise, it looks like Paramount Pictures and director J.J. Abrams is getting even better news.
It's release is a week after "Wolverine," but "Star Trek XI" has already sold 25 percent more tickets than "Wolverine." That means it's also trending better than "Iron Man" 3 to 1, plus another 25 percent.
It's very possible that despite second-week competition from a strongly performing "Wolverine," the latest "Star Trek" movie is poised to possibly top its overall biggest box office haul in history in one single weekend. "Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home" continues to hold that title, even 23 years later, with $109.7 million domestically, according to MovieWeb, ranking it No. 342 of all time. Converted to 2009 dollars, that's actually $212.7 million after inflation.
If "Star Trek" were to take a haul of more than $110 million on opening weekend, and earn $300 million over the course of its release, according to some analyst predictions, it would rank within the top 30 highest-grossing movies of all time. If it even wanted a chance to break the top 10, it would have to gross the more than $377 million from "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King," and hope "Wolverine" doesn't earn more.
"Wolverine" is released May 1, while "Star Trek XI" is released May 8 in theaters worldwide.
