'Dollhouse' Cancellation Rumors Debunked ... For Now
It's all a matter of math and DVDs
The Interwebs went into a panic today when Felicia Day, the beautiful clothes washer from "Doctor Horrible's Singalong Blog," sent a tweet to the world that her episode of "Dollhouse" wasn't airing on Fox.
She was right, but it seems rumors of the show's imminent doom have been, well, exaggerated.
Tim Minear, a consulting producer on the Fox series, said that in all 14 episodes have been shot for "Dollhouse," with the Fox network committed to airing 13 of them. However, since the pilot episode was scrapped and then inserted into other parts of the first season, that number dropped to 12, and a new episode ordered by Twentieth Century Fox Television for the DVD release (and not exactly intended to be aired anyway) starring Day and "Firefly's" Alan Tudyk will not air.
That doesn't mean the show's order has been cut, or that cancellation is on the horizon.
"The studio makes DVD and other deals based on the original 13" episodes, Minear told Whedonesque. "So we created a standalone kind of coda episode, which is the mythical new Episode 13. The network had already paid for 13 episodes, and this included the one they agreed to let us scrap for parts. It does not include the one we made to bring the number back to 13 for the studio side and its obligations.
"We always knew it would be for the DVD for sure, but we also think Fox should air it because it's awesome."
Fox hasn't announced a final decision for the fate of the show just yet, which has struggled in its Friday timeslot, but earlier reports through sources at the network to Airlock Alpha suggest the show could still be in line for a second season pickup, and a move to a new night.
"Dollhouse" airs Fridays at 9 p.m. ET on Fox.
