'Knight Rider' Crashes, 'Heroes' Renewed For Fourth

NBC acting exactly as observers expected

NBC made some quick decisions on what's coming and going for the 2009-10 campaign, and congratulations to Hiro Nakamura and Matt Parkman, but sorry Michael Knight.

"Knight Rider," as expected, got the axe following a single shortened season where changes from the higher-rated pilot didn't resonate with fans. It took over the Wednesday 8 p.m. timeslot where another nostalgic remake, "Bionic Woman," was tried and failed.

"Knight Rider" debuted with a 4.5 rating/7 share overnight at the end of September, but actually grew its audience over its first four episodes rising as high as a 4.9/8 by mid-October. However, two episodes later, "Knight Rider" would crash into the wall head on, falling to a 3.3/5 by November sweeps -- an audience loss of nearly 33 percent -- and never recovering.

It hit its lowest of lows on New Years Eve drawing just a 2.7/5, a fall of 45 percent. It did rebound the following week by 37 percent and stayed in the mid-3.0s for the remainder of its run.

In the end, "Knight Rider's" overnight ratings averaged a 3.7/6, down 33 percent from the 5.5/9 from what "Bionic Woman" averaged in the timeslot the year before.

Good news for "Heroes," however. Also as expected, NBC picked up the series for a fourth season despite the fact ratings have fallen 24 percent since last year, averaging a 5.0/7 so far this year from a 6.6/10 last year.

An official pickup for "Heroes" hasn't been announced publicly quite yet, but NBC entertainment president Angela Bromstad told The Hollywood Reporter that the superhero show remained strong overseas, and would be a perfect pairing with NBC's new fall show, "Day One."

"Every single place you go has heard about 'Heroes,'" Bromstad told the trade publication. "Whether you're in China or Japan or Russia."

"Knight Rider" ended its run Wednesday, scoring a 3.6/6, down from its overall average. "Heroes," however, continues on Mondays at 9 p.m. ET on NBC.
