So much of science-fiction film and television is based on genre works that first appeared in written form. In fact, one of the earliest films ever made was loosely based on two popular novels by Jules Verne and H.G. Wells.
The film, directed by Georges Melies in 1902, was called "Le Voyage dans la lune" -- A Trip to the Moon -- and used Verne's "From the Earth to the Moon" and Wells' "The First Men in the Moon" as inspiration.
