'Fringe' Relocates To Vancouver For Second Season
... well, that is if there IS a second season of the show
The show is set in Boston, but filmed in New York. But if there is a second season of "Fringe" on Fox, production will move to Vancouver, B.C. instead.
Entertainment Weekly is reporting the show could make its way to Canada next year after the $685 million film incentive program -- which was supposed to last New York until 2013 -- has already run dry.
While it will be a cross-country move for "Fringe," filming in Vancouver isn't too far fetched. Many television shows -- especially genre shows found on SciFi Channel and others -- are filmed in Vancouver as it has become Canada's leader in foreign television production. Typically, Vancouver was an option for much of the west coast filming while Toronto would work for east coast productions, but individual cities and provinces offer their own incentives, and Vancouver's has been winning out in terms of television productions as of late. The pilot was filmed in Toronto, but was moved to New York at the start of production of the first season.
"In this challenging and uncertain economic environment, we have made the very difficult decision to move," Warner Bros. Television, which produces "Fringe," told the magazine. "We did not come to this conclusion easily, but economic and practical imperatives dictated that this decision be made in a timely manner."
While the major actors are already locked into contracts, such a massive cross-country move could have long-term effects on production, and the ability to keep stars on board. Stars who tend to work long distances from home on television series sometimes pull away, as Richard Dean Anderson did with the Vancouver production of "Stargate SG-1," and how David Duchovny pushed to have production of "The X-Files" moved from Vancouver to Los Angeles.
The depletion of the film incentive fund won't affect just "Fringe," however, according to Entertainment Weekly. Another genre show, "Life On Mars" -- which moved its production from Los Angeles to New York -- could be forced to move as well. However, it is not likely that ABC will pick that series up for a second season, after its ratings tanked followed a move right after "Lost" on Wednesdays. It had already been struggling in a Thursday timeslot against CBS' breakout genre hit, "Eleventh Hour."
"Fringe" airs Tuesdays at 9 p.m. ET on Fox.
