Studio Battle Over 'Watchmen' Now Settled

"Watchmen" will be released, on time, and with the Warner Bros. studio card in front of it. The studio, however, will have to pay an undisclosed amount of money and provide some profit residuals to Twentieth Century Fox to satisfy its claim that it owns the distribution rights to the film.

Both sides announced the compromise late Wednesday night that will allow "Watchmen" -- whose March release had been threatened by the lawsuit -- to premiere on time.

For whatever reasons, Fox waited until after Warner Bros. had finished the $130 million movie before suing claiming they owned the distribution rights to the "Watchmen" graphic novel, and not Warners. The "Watchmen" studio said it owned the rights free and clear, but Fox claimed it had never relinquished all of them, a position a judge agreed with on Christmas Eve in a surprise summary ruling.

According to Fox, producer Larry Gordon shopped "Watchmen" to other studios without its permission, thus the rights Warner Bros. picked up were useless because Fox had to give its blessing first.

Following the ruling from Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Gary Feess, Warner Bros. worked to try and find a settlement in the case so that the film could be released as planned. It seems apparent that Warner will see little if any profit from this film, no matter how successful it is. And if it tanks at the box office, it could really hit the bottom line hard of the studio in an already tough economy.

Warner Bros. is not happy with how the situation panned out. According to E! Online, the studio is now targeting Gordon, a producer on the film, for court costs it incurred in the legal battle, claiming Gordon should've known the rights were not properly secured.

"Watchmen" premieres March 6.
