Bald Cap Key To Lex's 'Smallville' Return?

By ALAN STANLEY BLAIR Jan-13-2009

Where is Lex Luthor?

That is the question that has been posed by most of "Smallville's" central figures throughout the current eighth season. But despite glimpses of the bald mastermind, the chances of Michael Rosenbaum reprising his role are minimal ... unless he has a bald cap.

The actor, who has shaved his head for seven years for his role on the series, is naturally enjoying having hair and plans to continue enjoying it regardless of his return to "Smallville." So when producers previously asked him back for a role in the eighth season, his answer has always been the same: only for the final episodes and only if he can wear a bald cap.

In the mid-season finale, fans were treated to a few shots showing Lex in a dire situation as he is forced to watch Smallville's home movies and the rise of Doomsday. The shots were comprised of clever camera panning and body doubles without the aid of Rosenbaum himself. Teasers for the second half of the season are already teasing at a possible return with additional scenes of the same nature hinting at a possible return for the elusive billionaire.

But when will the season end? Reports suggest that talks are underway with Tom Welling to continue his role on the series for a ninth season, making it one of the longest running and most established show in The CW's arsenal. Should the talks fail, "Smallville" will most likely end in May and hopefully with Lex Luthor as a part of it.

"Smallville" airs Thursdays at 8 p.m. ET on The CW.
