The Roddenberry family has decided to allow fans to celebrate the life of Majel Barrett Roddenberry at a funeral service to be held Jan. 4 in Los Angeles.
Mrs. Roddenberry died Dec. 18 after a battle with leukemia, shocking the Star Trek world as it lost its first lady of the television and movie franchise.
The service will be held at 10 a.m. at the Hall of LIberty at Forest Lawn in Hollywood Hills, 6300 Forest Lawn Drive, in Los Angeles that day. The Roddenberry family asks there be no photography or videography at the hall, a departure from the high-profile funeral of "Star Trek" creator Gene Roddenberry in 1991.
"While the Roddenberry family appreciates your kind wishes and wants to share the celebration of Majel Roddenberry's life with all that knew and loved her, they ask that you respect this time of mourning and their privacy after the service," the family said in a statement.
While the attire for the funeral is "business casual," the family has asked those attending to keep one thing in mind when choosing their wardrobe: "Majel hated to be bland, so please wear something colorful."
Anyone wishing to attend the Roddenberry funeral is asked to notify the family through an online form available at Roddenberry.com. While it will not reserve a place at the funeral for those filling out the form, it will help the Roddenberry family get an idea of the number of people expected to show up.
In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made in Mrs. Roddenberry's name to the CARE Organization and Precious Paws, both of which shared her love for animals and dedication to animal rescue. Precious Paws can be reached at 18034 Ventura Blvd., Suite 430, Encino, Calif., 91316, or at www.preciouspaws.org. Donations can be made to CARE at P.O. Box 56631, Sherman Oaks, Calif., 91403, or at www.care4pets.org.
Mrs. Roddenberry was survived by her son, Eugene W. Roddenberry Jr.
